About US

Heartland Dog Training is a non-profit dog training and education foundation on Peoria´s Northeast side. Our training facility is nestled back in the trees - far from any highway - and has plenty of flat, mowed, outdoor grassy spaces for dog training. We have a fully handicap-accessible, regulation size, obedience ring in our air-conditioned building. We also have a fully fenced outdoor area where you can come and work on any training problems that you are experiencing.

Our all-volunteer staff has been training, showing, and placing titles on their own dogs for years. Their love of dogs is shown by the care and concern they show toward their own dogs and yours. All our volunteers love and respect animals. It does not matter if you want a well-mannered, all-around pet or if your goal is to show your dog in obedience trials. With your help, our goal is to aid you with having the best dog you can live in your home.

Heartland features small classes and a friendly atmosphere. You will receive personal attention for your dog´s problems in an open, non-judgmental manner. Our methods follow the AKC Novice Platform. Please visit our Class Descriptions for more information. Feel free to visit our classes to decide if we are the right fit for you and your dog!

In 1997, Joan Segler, with the support of Chuck Summers, formed the Heartland Dog Training and Education Foundation, as a non-profit organization to promote community awareness of responsible dog ownership and to enhance the human and animal bond.

The Foundation has donated to worthy local causes such as the St. Jude Midwest Affiliate, Methodist Medical Center, Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter, and the Father Sweeney Home.

The Foundation is grateful to the large number of volunteers who give their time, so that you will know the ultimate joy of having a companion that is a well-mannered part of the family. Our of our goals is to provide training which will reduce the number of dogs that are surrendered and euthanized each year because of behavior problems.

Because of its non-profit status, the Foundation exists through donations and gifts monetary or material donations. Volunteers offer one of the most precious gifts, their time.
